Two films from the TIFF-programme won Oscars
Two films from the programme at Tromsø International Film Festival 2026 went on to win awards at the 98th Academy Awards in Hollywood. SENTIMENTAL VALUE won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film, while HAMNET earned Jessie Buckley the award for Best Actress.

SENTIMENTAL VALUE, directed by Joachim Trier, was also nominated in several other categories, including Best Director and Best Actress for Renate Reinsve. In his acceptance speech, Trier used the moment to highlight children’s rights and the responsibility of adults in uncertain times.
“All adults are responsible for all children, and we must not vote for politicians who fail to take this seriously,” Trier said from the stage.
We congratulate our good friend and producer Maria Ekerhovd, Mer Film and the entire team behind SENTIMENTAL VALUE on the award. Ekerhovd founded the production company Mer Film in Tromsø in 2011 and at the time had offices with TIFF at Verdensteatret.
HAMNET was one of the festival’s most attended films and part of the main competition programme. The film received several Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. During the ceremony, Jessie Buckley won the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in the film.
In her acceptance speech, Buckley dedicated the award to “the beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart.”
The biggest winner of the night was ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, which took home six awards including Best Picture and Best Director. SINNERS also performed strongly, winning several awards including Best Cinematography - a historic win for Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who became the first woman ever to receive the award. During her speech she asked all the women in the audience to stand.
The 98th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on March 15.
