Publisert 31.08.2022 — Sandra Aminda Indahl

For the 23rd year running the section will present new films from the Barents Region and other circumpolar areas. Feature films as well as shorts and documentaries are eligible. Films are qualified if the subject or the production is connected to the northern regions of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Canada, America (Alaska) or Iceland and Greenland.

Selected films can be presented in or outside of competition. Tromsøpalmen will be awarded to the best short or documentary in competition, along with a prize of €5000 to the film’s director.

New program director Films from the North

We are happy to announce Astrid Aure as our new program director for the sidebar Films from the North. Building on an extensive experience with storytelling and management as a journalist and editor, Astrid joined the Tromsø International Film Festival team as Chief Operating Officer in 2014. She has since been involved in every aspect of the organization, always with the film itself and the audience’s encounter with it at heart. Currently, she is finalizing her master thesis in film studies, writing about the emerging northern indigenous feminist fiction cinema.

- Films from the North is key to both film industry and audiences in the circumpolar region, and I’m excited to be working with the talented filmmakers in presenting an engaging array of northern based stories in the most popular side bar of the Tromsø International Film Festival. My ambition is to further strengthen the program and the industry platform it represents, says Aure.

Film Submission

The submission deadline is October 20th, 2022. Works-in-progress are accepted. A selection committee appointed by the festival will review all submitted films.

- The Barents region and the entire circumpolar areas are facing some enormous challenges right now, while also bustling with still untold, fascinating stories. I look forward to seeing this year’s creative work as we now launch the call for entries for Films from the North 2023, says Aure.
