Here are this year’s award winners

On Saturday evening, the winners of TIFF 2024 were announced during the closing ceremony at the Kulturhuset in Tromsø. A total of 7 awards were presented from the stage before the festival's closing film, THE HOLDOVERS by Alexander Payne.

AURORA AWARD

The festival's main prize is awarded to the best film in the competition program. The director of the winning film receives 5000 Euro from TIFF.

This year's jury: Cédric Succivalli, Barbara Gasser, and Kristin Bjørn.

Winner: Housekeeping for Beginners. Country: Sweden, Kosovo, Poland, Serbia, Croatia, Australia. Year: 2023. Director: Goran Stolevski

Honorable Mention: Four Daughters. Country: France, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Tunisia. Year: 2023. Director: Kaouther Ben Hania.


FIPRESCI AWARD

The international critic prize, awarded by the Federation Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique, the international umbrella organization of professional film critics and film journalists, established in 1930.

This year's jury: Simon Popek, Fernando Salvá, and Peter Stuart Robinson.

Winner: Riceboy Sleeps. Country: Canada. Year: 2022. Director: Anthony Shim.

DON QUIXOTE AWARD

The prize is awarded by FICC (Federation internationale des cine-clubs). The organization was founded in 1947 at the Cannes Film Festival, and is an umbrella organization for film clubs and non-commercial cinemas.

This year's jury: Maria Amalie Rikardsen, Katharina Anna Franck, and Ariadna Ulldemolins Abad.

Winner: Four Daughters. Country: France, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Tunisia. Year: 2023. Director: Kaouther Ben Hania.

Honorable Mention: Riceboy Sleeps. Country: Canada. Year: 2022. Director: Anthony Shim


NORWEGIAN PEACE FILM AWARD (NoFPA)

The Norwegian Peace Film Award (NoPFA) is given to a film spotlighting direct, structural or cultural violence, and which in a creative way contributes to a deeper understanding of conflicts and violence. The award is presented by TIFF in collaboration with the Centre for Peace Studies at the University of Tromsø and the Student Network for Peace.

This year's jury: Ana Luisa Sanchez, Helene Victoria Rosså, and Fredrik Mortensen.

Winner: The Monk and the Gun. Country: Bhutan. Year: 2023. Director: Pawo Choyning Dorji

THE TROMSØ PALM - SHORTS

The Tromsø Palk is awarded to the best short film (under 60 minutes) in the side program Films from the North. The director of the winning film receives 5000 euros from film resource centers in the Barents region.

This year's jury: Viktor Enoksen, Hrönn Marinosdóttir, and Carl Christian Lein Størmer.

THE TROMSØ PALM - FEATURES

In 2019, Films from the North expanded to include feature films in the section. This year marks the first time a separate prize is awarded for the best feature film in the Film from the North side program. The director of the winning film receives 2500 Euro from TIFF.

This year's jury: Saara Saarela, Kingsford Siayor, and Martha Otte.

Winner: Je'vida" Country: Finland. Year: 2023. Director: Katja Gauriloff. 

 

Honorable Mention: What We See. Country: Canada. Year: 2023. Directors: Lucy Tulugarjuk, Carol Kunnuk.

FAITH IN FILM AWARD

The Faith in Film Award was given for the first time in 2017. It was established by Center for Art, Culture and Church, Norwegian Church Academies and Tromsø Church Academy in collaboration with the Tromsø International Film Festival.

The winner film should engage and stimulate to reflection and critical thinking about the religion’s place in society and in people’s lives.

The winner of the Faith in Film Award receives a hand-painted icon, made in the Carmelite monastary in Tromsø.

This year's jury: Eilif Bremer Landsend, Tale Næss, and Einar-Arne Drivenes.

Winner: Punishment. Country: Norway. Year: 2024. Director: Øystein Mamen

THE AUDIENCE AWARD

Every year the festival audience votes for their favorite film at the festival.

Winner: Ibelin. Country: Norway. Year: 2024. Director: Benjamin Ree.
