These films are part of TIFF UNG, a dedicated side program curated by and for the youth of Tromsø.
A Shared Passion for Film
In collaboration with the youth center Tvibit, the festival has recruited young people aged 15-19 who, despite coming from different schools, share one common interest: film!
- Working with the TIFF UNG youth is incredibly inspiring and fun, and this year’s team has put together an amazing program. TIFF UNG is an extensive participation project, so the festival invests a lot into creating a festival within the festival for 15-19-year-olds. And we get so much in return! says Astrid Aure, project manager for TIFF UNG/Children and Youth.
This year, 18 young people participated in the collaborative project. Through film screenings, discussions, and evaluations this fall, the team has crafted a program featuring three titles, which will have exclusive screenings for youth aged 15-19 during the festival in January.
This Year’s TIFF UNG Program
The program features three films: Kneecap by Rich Peppiatt, Dead Talents Society by John Hsu, and Dìdi by Sean Wang.
The youth themselves write the reviews for the films in this side program. Here’s why these three films were selected:
Teacher JJ is a strong advocate for preserving the endangered minority language, Irish. But what happens when he meets two teenagers who call themselves "low life scum" and write explicit rap lyrics in the language?
This humorous docudrama freely retells the story of how Kneecap formed their rap group.
- Kneecap is a super interesting film with mixed media, amazing songs, and extreme chaos. It’s beautiful and carries an incredible message about Irish as a language and culture, but also about minority languages and cultures in general, says Olaf from TIFF UNG.

A hilariously scary Taiwanese film that takes you through every emotion imaginable. The movie is about ghosts who must fight for their survival in the afterlife through a series of terrifying challenges on a "game show"!
- The TIFF UNG program committee thinks this horror-comedy is a rollercoaster and a fever dream with a hint of cilantro, say Ane and Kristina from TIFF UNG.

This fantastic film is a classic 2008 love story: boy meets girl, they become MySpace friends, and suddenly you’re thrown into an emotional kickflip.
- A very beautiful film that brought tears to many of us. At the same time, it feels very timely, and I think many young people can relate to it, says Nikolay from TIFF UNG.
The film takes us back to the golden age of Paramore and early YouTube. It also explores the challenges of growing up as part of a minority and how Chris learns to love his own mother.

Tickets for TIFF UNG
The films are closed screenings for those aged 15-19. Tickets for TIFF UNG cost 50 NOK per film, or you can see all three films in the program for 100 NOK. Ticket sales start on January 6th.
