Call for entries: Films from the North 2026!

We are happy to announce that submissions are now open for Films from the North 2026, our most popular side program.

Publisert 02.09.2025 — TIFF

Films from the North is the festival's program for films from the Barents Region and other circumpolar areas, running for the 26th year.

The program is constantly expanding: It now comprises the entire Arctic region, and feature length films as well as the original line up of shorts and documentaries. The audience favors our northern selection, with almost 10,000 tickets sold at the latest edition – and expectations are even higher for 2026. The impressive growth in quality as well as quantity spurred us to establish a new competition to honor the directors and further strengthen the program.

The Tromsø Palm for best feature film was introduced in 2024. In 2025, the award went to TEENAGE LIFE INTERRUPTED by Åse Svenheim Drivenes. The Tromsø Palm for short film was awarded to IN MY HAND, directed by Liselotte Wajstedt and Marja Helander.

We have now opened for submissions

Feature films as well as shorts and documentaries are eligible. Films are qualified if the subject, the production or the director is connected to Sápmi, northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia and Canada, as well as Alaska, Iceland and Greenland. See further specifications in the guidelines below.

Selected films can be presented in or out of competition. Tromsøpalmen (The Tromsø Palm) is awarded to the best short film and best feature film in competition, along with a prize of 5000 Euro to the short film’s director and 2500 Euro to the feature film’s director.

  • The submission deadline is October 12, 2025.
  • Filmmakers should expect feedback on their submissions by late November.
