Screening venues

Tromsø International Film Festival has expanded ever since its beginning. The festival now screens more films, has gained a larger audience and has naturally outgrown the traditional cinemas in Tromsø. Films are therefore screened in a variety of venues, all located in the city centre.

With its 613 seats, Storsalen (the Main Hall) at KulturHuset is the largest single venue at TIFF. The rest of the year, Storsalen is used as a concert venue for orchestral music, jazz, rock and other genres. You can also see theatre plays, stand up comedy and other stage productions here. But in the third week of January, it's only film on the menu.

Verdensteatret (The World Theatre) opened in 1916 and is Norway's oldest still operating cinema. TIFF runs Verdensteatret as a cinematheque the whole year through, but every year in third week of January it's all about the festival. Verdensteatret is also where the TIFF administration's offices are located. The theatre has 216 seats.

Studentsamfunnet Driv (Driv Student Society) is owned by Norges Arktiske Studentsamskipnad and
is run on voluntary basis by students at the University of Tromsø. Driv first opened on April 1st, 2000, and in January 2014 it was relocated to new facilities in Mack-kvartalet (Storgata 6). During TIFF we use the main stage (SNN-scenen) for film screenings and other parts of the house for other events.

Hålogaland Teater

Tromsø's beautiful theatre building opened in 2005 and has three theatre halls.
The biggest stage, Scene Vest with 330 seats is used for festival screenings during TIFF. Sometimes we also have social events in the theatre foyer.

The Winter Cinema

Tromsø International Film Festival is set in the dark polar nights, which give's TIFF the unique possibility to screen films outdoors. The Winter Cinema is this year located at Vervet. Every morning before the daylight arrives, we screen short films for school- and kindergarten kids. And when the winter darkness is back in the late afternoon we screen various films and short film programs for the grownups.
