A groundbreaking masterpiece and a symbol of megalomaniacal Nazi Germany. Leni Riefenstahl's famous documentary is a study in raw propaganda art.
Triumph of the Will is Leni Riefenstahl's documentary version of the German National Socialist Party Congress in Nuremberg in 1934. The Party Congress was staged on a colossal scale to celebrate the seizure of power in 1933 and the political unification of the party and the state.
At just 32, Riefenstahl was granted vast, unprecedented resources: cranes, special lifts, scaffolding, camera bridges and hundreds of staff to construct a magnificent propaganda spectacle. The film blazes with symbolism, marches, parades, and speeches, all serving as an homage to Hitler. The resulting work is a film-technical marvel, a relentless display of Nazism's 'will to power.' Its epic sweep of visuals and music forged the image of Germany as a unified and powerful nation, cementing its status as a textbook case in effective, yet terrifying, propaganda. Despite its abhorrent Nazi message, which has led to it being banned, its undeniable cinematic artistry was recognized with awards at several film festivals.
Selected for Focus: Fascism
As the Third Reich’s most infamous propaganda film, this documentary of the 1934 Nazi Party Congress serves as the starting point for understanding the aesthetics of totalitarianism. While recognized as a cinematic masterpiece, it remains chilling in its shameless idealization of the Nazi Party, the German people, and the cult of personality surrounding Adolf Hitler.
Leni Riefenstahl (1902-2003) was a German documentary filmmaker. She began her career as a dancer and actress. Her directorial debut, The Blue Light (1932), impressed Adolf Hitler, who commissioned her to create propaganda films.
