The Traitor tells the epic true story of Tommaso Buscetta, the so-called "boss of the two worlds". As member of the Cosa Nostra, Buscetta became the first mafia informant in Sicily in the 1980s, and brought hundreds of mafiosi to court.
We are in the early 1980s, and the Sicilian mafia bosses are at war with one another over the heroin trade. Tommaso Buscetta, a member of the Cosa Nostra with an international criminal record, is arrested in Brazil. Watching from afar as several of his relatives are killed in Sicilia, he becomes disillusioned and is convinced by anti-mafia judge Giovanni Falcone to become an informant. Breaking the strict code of silence of the Cosa Nostra, he reveals precious information on the mafia's hierarchy and initiation rituals.
The Traitor is both a true gangster movie and a reflection on the motivations behind Tommaso Buscetta's decision to become an informant. Ranging from the 1970s to the late 1990s, the film follows the charismatic and enigmatic protagonist through three decades of his involvement with the Cosa Nostra – from his first brush with illegal activities to his desire to take revenge against his former bosses.
The Traitor was originally planned to premiere at Tromsø International Film Festival in 2021, but due to the pandemic all screenings were cancelled. We are very pleased to finally present the film.
