A romantic indie-comedy from Montreal's music scene.
Grace Pine, a music critic from Toronto, moves to Montreal in the summer of 2011. Unable to speak a word of French, she throws herself into the city's pulsating indie rock environment with an ambitious goal: to write a book about Alanis Morissette's album "Jagged Little Pill". In these new surroundings, Grace is a double outsider, both linguistically and as a woman in a male-dominated scene. She quickly meets two members of the band Boner Patrol and becomes entangled in a tentative and uncertain love triangle, where she must navigate the difficult line between career and romance.
This is an autobiographical film by Chandler Levack, who visited TIFF in 2023 with the film I Like Movies. Audiences will recognize the intellectual and over-analyzing humor, which strikes when you least expect it. Mile End Kicks is a romantic comedy that refuses to sweep trauma and insecurity under the rug. One could call it a realistic and understated Almost Famous, with a woman in the leading role. Barbie Ferreira is brilliant in the main role, capturing Grace's innocent and tentative nature without turning her into a damsel in distress.
