In this supremely elegant and suspenseful thriller, Tom Ripley is tasked with convincing shipping heir Dickie to leave his extravagant life in Italy and return home. But Ripley acquires a taste for the good life, and a desire to take Dickie’s place.
Tom Ripley is novelist Patricia Highsmith’s perhaps most iconic character, one that she apparently could not get enough of herself; in all, she wrote five novels about the insidious con man. The Talented Mr. Ripley, which is based on the first of these books, has attained status as a modern classic, featuring an unnervingly seductive lead performance by Matt Damon.
The son of a wealthy shipping magnate, Dickie Greenleaf enjoys an extravagant lifestyle in a seaside village in Italy. Dickie’s father sends Ripley there, to convince his son to return to the States. The mission does not go according to plan. A mixture of fascination, desire and envy develops into an obsession, and Ripley soon finds an opportunity to take Dickie’s place. He does not shy away from murder to accomplish his goal and cover his tracks.
A star-studded cast, including Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, deliver some of their best performances in this elegant, suspenseful thriller.
