Maya and the Wave

Watch trailer

In this documentary, we meet the Brazilian surfer Maya Gabeira – and the monster wave that nearly took her life.

Maya grew up in Rio de Janeiro, started surfing at the age of 13, and turned professional when she was 17. In the following years, she won numerous competitions and became one of the sport's biggest stars. Maya got Red Bull as a sponsor and was part of the first season of the HBO series 100 Foot Wave, a docuseries that follows the world's best big wave surfers. But this film is about more than just surfing. It's about fighting to reach your goals, how to navigate male chauvinism in the sport, and how to push through when faced with serious injuries.

Director Stephanie Johnes followed Maya for ten years, documenting her struggle to come back and set new records. The film features spectacular waves and an inspiring story.
