Palestine 36 is a magnificent drama that brings a pivotal chapter in Palestine's history to life.
The film follows an ensemble of characters who feel the consequences of colonial rule firsthand—including a young Palestinian named Yusuf, a Palestinian family, and British officials. With a rising number of Jewish immigrants fleeing antisemitism in Europe, and the Palestinian population uniting in the largest and longest revolt against Britain's 30-year rule, everyone is heading toward an inevitable collision. What happens in Palestine in 1936 will prove to be a defining moment for the British Empire and the future of the entire region.
Palestine 36 combines intimate, personal stories with the major historical and political changes that characterized the era. In this way, we gain a powerful insight into how political upheavals affected the lives of ordinary people. The result is an ambitious and compelling work that sheds light on a less well-known part of Palestine's history.
