The Last Paradise on Earth

Watch trailer

A gripping and sensitive Faroese drama about the challenges of choosing a simpler life. Winner of the Nordic Council Film Prize.

Kári lives a simple life on a windswept island in the Faroe Islands. He stands on the threshold of adulthood just as the small village he grew up in is suffering from depopulation. The fish processing plant, the community's main source of income, is threatened with closure. The sea is dead, and everyone around him seems to agree that there is no future here. When his father leaves to work on a fishing boat, Kári is left with the responsibility for his annoyed teenage sister. Everyone is moving on, and Kári is confronted with the question of what is holding him back – is it the quiet sorrow of the past, or a genuine desire to create a brighter future here?

The Last Paradise on Earth is a love letter to the village, and to what keeps it alive: the people, the memories, the nature. It is a beautiful reminder that even though the world is vast and full of opportunities, a small island in the Faroe Islands can be just right for some of us.
