Samtaler om Nord: Urfolk og populærkultur – mellom kamp og kunst

"Talks of the North" builds a bridge between the silver screen and the public debate. Tromsø International Film Festival invites, together with iTromsø, UiT The Arctic University of Norway and Samfunnsløftet, to a series of talks based on one or more of this year's festival films.

This year's program at TIFF shows a number of films from and about northern indigenous communities. They tackle a variety of themes from many different places, and are thus part of a larger trend within cultural expressions from indigenous peoples. In this conversation, we will talk about indigenous people and popular culture, identity, the demand for importance, activism and the relationship with the majority society.

In the panel:
Jon Muotka Pedersen - director of the short film Mojunjálmmiid (Smiley)
Anne Lajla Utsi - director at the International Sami Film Institute
Sajje Solbakk - festival manager Riddu Riđđu
Stine Sand - associate professor at UiT Norway's Arctic University

Moderator: Torjer A. Olsen - head of the Center for Sami Studies, UiT Norwegian Arctic University

Time: Wednesday, January 18th at 4:30 pm
Location: Tromsø library
