The Son and the Sea

"Sort room. Sort head. Sort life," Jonah writes in his notebook. He is a young man with ADHD and dyslexia, characterized by self-isolation at home and a high consumption of alcohol. He needs to get away, and the opportunity arises when his great-aunt in Scotland offers a cabin by the sea for recreation. Jonah takes his best friend Lee to a small fishing village that can seem just as isolating as the room he fled, where the waves literally crash into the walls. During their stay in the small cabin, they meet Charlie, a deaf man struggling with the consequences of his twin brother's misdeeds. What starts as a chance encounter at the local pub gradually develops into something deeper. The three young men slowly develop a relationship that opens the possibility for personal growth.

The Son and the Sea is at its most powerful in its quiet moments. An outstanding acoustic performance of "The False Knight on the Road" underlines the film's message: It is the choices we make, and the people we meet, that guide us forward.
