The Day Iceland Stood Still

Watch trailer

In this cheerful but powerful documentary, we get an insight into the fascinating events, strategies and coincidences building up to the day in 1975 when 90% of Iceland's women went on strike for women's rights.

The 1970s were characterized by traditional gender roles and limited rights for women, and Iceland was no exception. Women were largely responsible for the household and childcare, were paid less than men, and were not allowed to participate in the agricultural society. Inspired by the red-stocking community worldwide, they decided that enough was enough. On October 24, 1975, 90% of all women on Iceland left their jobs and household responsibilities, shutting down the entire country.

The Day Iceland Stood Still is a smart and captivating documentary that, through a combination of archival material, personal narratives and interviews with those who took part, gives a deeper understanding of what this day meant to Iceland, and how it shaped society in the years that followed.
