Together with Riddu Riđđu Festival we present this special audiovisual concert with Elle Márjá Eira. Multitalented Eira brings her cool ambient music withjoik influences together with strong images and stories from her home. This is a special experience where you will meet Eira in an intimate setting in one of Tromsø’s most spectacular venues.
During the pandemic, Eira made the film together with cinematographer Ken Are Bongo. The music is composed by the musicians playing at the film concert. During the lockdown, the music files were sent back and forth between Guovdageaidnu, Romsa, UK, Scotland, and Ireland.

After the concert Elle Márjá Eira will meet with Sandra Márjá West in a conversation about Eira’s work process with film and music and what it means to be a Sámi artist today.

About EALÁT:

“As long as the reindeer exist here, so do we”. Through Elle Márjá’s eyes we follow her family in different seasons with their reindeer herd. A story about living and surviving in Sámi reindeer husbandry in strange times.

The film premiered at Tromsø International Film Festival in 2021 and has had several screenings such as Skábmagovat, imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, Love & Anarchy - Helsinki International Film Festival, Devour! The Food Film Fest, Bergamo film meeting, Scandinavia house, The Misleór Festival, The National Nordic Museum, Golden Raven Arctic International Film Festival, Northern Character International Film & TV Festival and so on.


Director

Elle Márjá Eira is a filmmaker, musician, writer and artist from Guovdageaidnu. She has directed and produced several short films and has also collaborated with composer Christophe Beck in making soundtrack to The 12th Man (dir. Harald Zwart). Eira has been a strong and uncompromising voice in Sápmi for several years across genres and forms of expression.As a musical artist she joiks in her native Sámi tongue with a presence, rawness and ingenuity that transcends language barriers. She excels at the intersection of joik, ambient and Indigenous music. Eira is known for her concerts which are never the same where improvisations arise in between worlds. She is a member of the band Snoweye together with Lucy Parnell and John Paul Jones.

She is currently working on several film and art projects. In her heart she is a true reindeer herder and belongs to reindeer district D-26 Lákkonjárga.
