Nature, dreams, and change meet in this striking documentary about the people who represent the last remnants of Finnish Lapland’s gold rush.
Lapland is full of gold. In the late 1800s, Klondike-like conditions prevailed in the Finnish part of the region. Since then, countless adventurers have been struck by gold fever and journeyed there in search of hidden treasures. A few have never let go of the dream, but inevitably, the era of gold is coming to an end. For some, this threatens the only life they know; for others, it offers hope for a new beginning.
The Last Misfits by the Golden River is a minimalist and charming documentary about a group of hopefuls still searching for gold. In their pursuit of the extraordinary, many beautiful, small moments emerge among eccentric loners and tight-knit families in a mesmerizing landscape. The film’s observational, lingering style highlights the bond between people and nature – and how modernity and change are gradually catching up with them.
Juho-Pekka Tanskanen (b. 1988) is a Finnish documentary filmmaker from Helsinki. He co-founded the production company Danish Bear Productions with Isabella Karhu in 2015. The Last Misfits by the Golden River is his second documentary film.
