Mighty Afrin: In the Time of Floods

Watch trailer

The Brahmaputra River is rising again, ready to engulf everything in its path. On a mud island along the riverbank, Afrin, a 12-year-old orphaned girl, must leave the only world she has known.

In a low-lying coastal area along the Brahmaputra River, Afrin lives on a flood-ravaged island without electricity. Faced with pressure from relatives for an illegal marriage, Afrin, unlike her peers, has plans and a strong will. When floods submerge her home, she decides to embark on a perilous boat journey in search of the father she has never met.

Bangladesh grapples with a unique set of challenges. Its dense population, low sea level, and relentless monsoon season force many to become climate refugees. Over 10 million people have sought refuge in the elevated expanse around the megacity of Dhaka.

Mighty Afrin: In The Time of Floods is an epic female coming-of-age documentary film marked by resilience and survival. Using a profound and visually powerful cinematic approach, director Angelos Rallis brings us close to Afrin's emotional quest, showcasing her courage, sense of humor, and determination in the face of humanity's most serious existential threat.
