Pebbles

Watch trailer

A furious and violent man pulls his son out of school, forcing him to come along to the neighbouring village. They are there to retrieve his wife, who has left to get away from her abusive husband.

In Pebbles, the heat of the sun, the inhospitable desert landscape and the occasional wildlife are as central to the film as the two main characters. This is a portrait of an Indian village as well as a human drama. The father and son's journey, both by bus and on foot, introduces us to a variety of characters, places and situations that tell us something about a part of the world that is still untouched by modern times, and about the people who live there.

The film is a textbook example of how, with few means and a simple story, you can make great film art. Director Vinothraj’s cinematic language is precise and down-to-earth, and doesn’t resort to melodramatic solutions. The father and son don’t say much to each other, yet we understand everything we need to know about their relationship, which varies between everything from fear, respect and love. The question is not only whether they will eventually find the mother, but whether their relationship can be saved despite the father’s behavior.
