Watch trailer

Kleber Mendonça Filho's intricate thriller is an intoxicating and riveting journey through Brazil's politically charged 1970s, starring a brilliant Wagner Moura in the lead role.

Brazil, 1977. The country is burdened by a brutal military dictatorship where violence and corruption permeate everyday life. We meet Armando (Wagner Moura), a former academic who is on the run after exposing a corrupt politician. He seeks refuge in his hometown of Recife but quickly discovers that the military dictatorship's grip extends right into his new reality. Using an alias, he lives with several others in a so-called safe house while awaiting fake passports from an underground movement. He lives in constant danger, and the line between friend and foe is unclear.

Director Kleber Mendonça Filho once again proves his masterful ability to establish tension and drive. The film flows between various characters and timelines, forcing the viewer to piece the plot together like detective work. This is a sharp political work that keeps the audience captivated until the very end.
