In this powerful and sorrowful love story about the Shakespeare family, the play Hamlet is created. Hamnet is a complex drama that poses the ancient question of "to be or not to be".
The tutor William Shakespeare (Mescal) meets the falconer Agnes (Buckley) in the forest, and they both feel an immediate connection to each other. They find solidarity in their unorthodox love, even though their families oppose it. But they have little say in the matter as Agnes becomes pregnant. Agnes and William have three children, and daily life settles into place. But then, problems in their emotional relationship begin to surface. Through William's longing to go to London to write, and Agnes's anchoring to home and children, a heartbreaking drama arises that will make even the most hardened shed a tear.
Hamnet is filled with natural aesthetics and is a depiction of life's small, lovely moments – but also the traumatizing events that mark you forever. Hamnet is not a simple drama about how Hamlet was written; it is a story of unity and sorrow that tears at the heart.
