Greta Lee and Willem Dafoe shine in a pleasing New York story.

Ed Saxberger (Willem Dafoe) is a once-promising poet from Manhattan's gritty 1970s literary scene who abandoned his creative ambitions for a quiet life working at the post office. Everything shifts when he's rediscovered by a group of earnest young artists who call themselves “The Enthusiasm Society”. Flattered by their attention – particularly from the charismatic actress Gloria (Greta Lee) – Ed begins reconsidering his life choices.

Adapted by Samy Burch from Arthur Schnitzler's 19th-century novella and directed by Kent Jones, the film is an examination of creative aspiration versus pretentious posturing. It marks Jones's second feature after Diane and documentary Hitchcock/Truffaut, while showcasing Burch's talent following her Oscar-nominated May December screenplay.

This film was chosen by film critic Wendy Ide.
