O Brother, Where Art Thou?

George Clooney, John Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson shine as three fugitives on a quest for a secret treasure in this highly entertaining comedy from the Coen Brothers. The combination of Greek myths, lively characters, and catchy folk music contributes to the film's enduring appeal.

The three prisoners, Everett (Clooney), Pete (Turturro), and Delmar (Blake Nelson), escape together from a chain gang. The charismatic leader, Everett, possesses great oratory skills, lofty ambitions, and an even larger self-image, and with promises of a buried treasure that only Everett knows the location of, the trio embarks on an adventure through the American South in the 1930s. Along the way, they encounter a plethora of characters who both help and hinder the unusual trio.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? is a charming and accessible adventure film. The plot is inspired by Homer's Odyssey, but it equally serves as a journey through the political and musical myths of the United States during the great depression. The film uniquely blends comedy, mythology, and music, featuring a vibrant visual language, masterful editing, and a fantastic bluegrass and folk music soundtrack curated and composed by T Bone Burnett. The soundtrack topped the Billboard charts and won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2002.

The film is shown on 35 mm film in collaboration with Verdensteatret - Cinemateket i Tromsø.
