Queens of Concrete is a coming-of-age documentary that follows three young skateboarders over six years. In 2016, Hayley (14), Ava (13), and Charlotte (9) have their sights firmly fixed on the 2020 Summer Olympics—the first-ever Games to hold a skateboarding event.
With just a few spots left on the Australian Olympic team, the girls are given life-changing opportunities to compete on the world stage. But heartbreak swiftly follows as they each experience devastating hardship. Hayley is dumped by multiple coaches while coming to terms with her sexuality, two of Ava’s best friends unexpectedly and tragically pass away, and Charlotte is disqualified from the Olympic Team due to forces beyond her control. From humble beginnings in rural Australia to iconic locations around the world, Queens of Concrete starts as an Olympic journey but soon becomes a tale of resilience, triumph and self-discovery.
At the same time, the girls face the familiar obstacles of their teen years. Charlotte is constantly told she’s too young to do anything, Ava tests her freedom with or without her parent’s permission, and Hayley already feels the weight of past success on her shoulders.
Through all this, the girls are continually reminded that they participate in a male-dominated sport and must continue to defy tradition to achieve their Olympic dreams. Each girl will take a different journey over the five years. Where will it take them and who will they be at the end?
