The End

Watch trailer

The End is a post-apocalyptic musical drama that takes place in a world where most of humanity has been wiped out. A family lives in a state-of-the-art bunker, convinced that they are the only survivors.

The film follows a wealthy couple (Michael Shannon and Tilda Swinton) and their adult son (George MacKay), who live in a luxurious underground bunker with their staff after the world has been devastated by climate collapse. Their secluded existence is disrupted when a young woman arrives from the outside. She challenges their worldview and stirs up feelings of guilt over their role in the collapse.

With the salt mine as a backdrop, The End explores themes of privilege, responsibility, and generational conflict. Director Joshua Oppenheimer, known for his Oscar-nominated films The Act of Killing (2012) and The Look of Silence (2014), has created a dark film that still finds room for optimism. The film has unique musical elements—with music by Josh Schmidt and Marius de Vries—where characters break into expressive songs that reveal their inner struggles without overshadowing the story. With its elegantly staged musical numbers, The End brings a fresh approach to the genre, blending surrealism and introspection in a visually rich setting that explores both human connection and isolation.
