Valéria Sorolla and Telmo Irureta excel in this intimate and sober drama about a young woman's relationship with a man with cerebral palsy. Through their meetings, sexuality, disability, and outlook on life are explored.
18-year-old Laura (Valéria Sorolla) has just moved to Madrid to study. She spends her days at university and her evenings in the city's bustling streets. One night she meets David (Telmo Irrueta), who has cerebral palsy. David is an activist for sexual rights for people with cerebral palsy and lives with his mother (Emma Suárez). The meeting with David opens new doors for Laura, and she takes on the role of his sexual assistant while exploring her own sexuality.
The Rite of Spring is a strong character portrait of a young woman's encounter with adulthood and exploration of her sexuality, through both conversation and action. This drama is strengthened by strong performances as well as elegant, observational camerawork focused on Laura's face, and the more intimate scenes are tastefully depicted. The film also explores sexuality as a universal concept, which is a natural part of all people's lives.
Fernando Franco (b. 1976) is a Spanish filmmaker. He won the Goya Award for Best New Director for his debut film Wounded. The Rite of Spring is his third feature film. He has also worked extensively as an editor.
