A Complete Unknown

Watch trailer

The year is 1961, and an enigmatic 19-year-old arrives in New York with a guitar and a divine talent. What follows is a revolutionary chapter in music history.

A Complete Unknown delves into Bob Dylan's early years in New York. We follow his journey from the folk scene in Greenwich Village to his first taste of fame. The film is based on the book Dylan Goes Electric by Elijah Wald and builds up to the pivotal decision Dylan made at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. It offers an intimate look at his friendship with Pete Seeger (played by Edward Norton), his admiration for Woody Guthrie, and the women in his life, including the great folk star Joan Baez, brilliantly portrayed by Monica Barbaro.

And then there's the music! The film delivers a parade of hits that most will recognize, cementing Dylan's unique position as one of the most iconic songwriters in history. Timothée Chalamet lived with the role for five years, learning to sing and play guitar like Dylan—and it shows, as his performance is magnetic. Director James Mangold has crafted a sparkling film about Bob Dylan's journey from a complete unknown to a global superstar.
