In master director Steven Spielberg's autobiographical coming-of-age film, we meet the young and aspiring filmmaker Sammy Fabelman and his family. A riveting story about growing up affected by the magic of film.
Spielberg takes us back to the USA in the 50s and 60s, where we follow the young filmmaker Sammy Fabelman. We first meet him as a little boy, going into the cinema to see his first film. The train crash at the end of the movie fascinates him greatly, and from then on his life revolves almost entirely around cinema. His father Burt (Paul Dano) is a career-driven man who is on the way up, which means that the family is constantly on the move. His mother Mitzi (Michelle Williams) is a classically trained pianist but stays at home to look after the children. And when his parents' marriage unravels, it's no coincidence that young Sammy takes his camera into the Arizona desert to make a war film. Making films becomes a way out of all the difficulties, an escape from reality, a place where he can edit out the things he wants to forget and take control of the narrative.
The Fabelmans is a personal film for Spielberg, told with tenderness, empathy, warmth, and liveliness. The family portrait is influenced by his closeness to the characters. Photographer Janusz Kamiński masterfully captures both the big moments and the small details. John Williams is naturally the man behind the music. This is a classic Spielberg film that evokes emotions through its enchanting movie magic.
