The Old Bachelor is a dark and thought-provoking film that may evoke disgust and spark discussions about gender roles and equality.
The story follows two middle-aged brothers living with their elderly, alcoholic father. The father, a classic alpha male, bullies the eldest son, a quiet man with a love for literature. Meanwhile, the younger son fantasizes about killing their father so he and his brother can inherit the house. When the father rents out part of the house to a woman with intentions of marrying her, a battle of dominance ensues.
The Old Bachelor is an Iranian drama inspired by The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky. The film explores gender inequality and masculinity, delivering gripping performances and dramatic tension with unexpected twists. The acting is exceptional, particularly from Hassan Pourshirazi as the cruel father, Hamed Behdad as the eldest son, and Leila Hatami as the new tenant.
Oktay Baraheni (b. 1974) is an Iranian film director and writer. His career includes several feature films, short films and a documentary. He also has a background in journalism.
