Captain Volkonogov Escaped

Watch trailer

An NKVD officer on the run tries to escape his former colleagues in a thrilling moral fable from pre-war Leningrad.

Fyodor Volkonogov is part of the Soviet elite as an officer in Stalin’s infamous NKVD. The young captain supervises arrests and interrogations of alleged traitors and spies within all ranks of Russian society. It’s 1938 and the whole union seems utterly paranoid. People are accused of treason left and right, even within the military and the communist party itself, and the repercussions are lethal. One day our young Captain realizes that he himself is under suspicion and soon to face the same treatment he has handed out so coldly to others. He makes a desperate escape, and with his former colleagues now chasing him through the streets of Leningrad, he starts visiting the families of people he himself has brought down.

Captain Volkonogov Escaped combines several elements of classical Russian storytelling. Metaphysical and moral elements questioning the individual’s role in the larger society played out on a beautiful and visually stunning grand scale. Gradually, what starts as a chase-thriller becomes something more profound as you realize the main character is not only trying to escape captivity but a whole system that has gone totally awry.
