2025
The year is 2025 in a war-torn Ukraine following a devastating war with Russia.
Veteran soldier Sergiy works at a steel mill and keeps his shooting skills sharp in the evenings. When the mill is shut down, he begins to drive a water truck to the “zone” – a vast desert-like area with poisoned water, blown apart by bombs and landmines. Here he meets Katya and joins a volunteer organization which identifies and buries casualties from the war.
ATLANTIS shows people in a seemingly bleak and hopeless situation, trying to find meaning in a chaotic world. Though set in nightmarish environmental circumstances, the film is visually stunning. Shot in striking tableaus, full of contrasts, it shows that there is beauty even in the wasteland of machines and bombed-out buildings. And through the cracks, glimmer of hope shines through.
