Titina

Watch trailer

The animated film Titina revisits the historic quarrel between polar explorer Roald Amundsen and airship designer Umberto Nobile, and tells the story from the perspective of Titina – Nobile's four-legged friend.

Roald Amundsen, who is well known to Norwegians, was the first man through the Northwest Passage, conquered the South Pole, and wanted to fly over the North Pole. Umberto Nobile was the engineer who constructed the airship Norge and led it on the polar journey. But Amundsen believed that Nobile broke the rules of the game, and Nobile felt overlooked. The disagreements would probably have been forgotten sooner, had it not been for Nobile's next expedition with the airship Italia in 1928, which resulted in an accident, rescue operations, and Amundsen's death.

Between Nobile and Amundsen, director Kajsa Næss has placed Titina, who is the film's main character: the world's most famous polar dog and participant in two North Pole expeditions. Animated films can simplify and clarify complicated narratives, which Titina knows how to exploit. The story is full of imaginative transitions between dreams and reality, to give life to the dog's subjective experiences, as well as musical elements and magnificent depictions of nature. The details are often beautiful and surprising.
