Pedro Almodóvar is back with a gripping tale of two mothers who simultaneously give birth to their baby daughters. With elegant elements of the thriller genre and finely tuned melodrama, this is classic Almodóvar, but also with some new and surprising links to the Spanish Civil War.
Janis (Penélope Cruz) is a 40-year-old professional photographer expecting a baby, after accidentally getting pregnant. At the hospital she meets 18-year-old Ana; also pregnant, but significantly more nervous about becoming a mother. Parallel Mothers shows how complicated, morally questionable and diverse family relations in a modern world can be. The film looks back at earlier times in Spanish history as well, channeled through Janis's need to find the remains of her great-grandfather, who went missing along with many others during the Spanish Civil War and Franco regime.
Pedro Almodóvar is Spain's most acknowledged and beloved filmmaker, and a master of the melodrama genre. In Parallel Mothers he lures us into a distinguished dance with several twists – always making room for delightful colors and undisguised elements of soap opera.
Pedro Almodóvar (b. 1949) is a Spanish film director and screenwriter. His films Talk to Her and All About My Mother won an Academy Award each. Family, sex, passion and identity are among Almodóvar's prevalent themes.
