A dark comedy about four young girls trying to cope with the absurdities of life.
Teenage girls Katharina, Ricky, Victoria, and Malou live together in a foster home in Berlin. The anarchic paradise they have established there is a kind of counterpoint to all the adults who have failed to care for them. Under the half-hearted care of social worker Ballack, they have managed to make daily life work here. However, the strange balance in the collective is threatened when Katharina attempts to end her life yet again. Katharina, who has been let down by adults her whole life, decided early on that she never wanted to grow up herself. As her 18th birthday creeps closer, she makes continuous attempts to take her own life—but since she fails time and again, her friends are convinced that she doesn't actually want to die. Ricky, Victoria, and Malou fight to keep Katharina alive, while simultaneously having to hide the chaos in the collective from the adults. Otherwise, they risk the only place they have ever called home dissolving.
Thanks For Nothing can be seen as the youths' collective middle finger to all the adults who have ever failed them. Although the film deals with heavy themes, it is done with a tragicomic and slightly absurd approach, making the film a breath of fresh air.
Stella Marie Markert is a German director with a degree from Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. Thanks For Nothing is her first feature film.
