At more than 90 years old, Georgian iconic filmmaker Lana Gogoberidze is back with a striking documentary that blends political and personal. Through an intimate portrait of her inspiring mother, Nutsa, Gogoberidze reflects on what it means to keep one’s humanity amid dark times.
In Mother and Daughter, or the Night Is Never Complete, Lana Gogoberidze circles back to a topic that has pervaded most of her films –and her life: her mother Nutsa, Georgia’s first female director. Nutsa directed several films before they were banned by the Stalinist regime in the 1930s. Later she was arrested and spent 12 years in prison as a political prisoner. This haunting documentary blends footage from the films of both the mother and daughter, as well as poetry and the voiceover of Lana as she guides us in this journey.
In turn tender, nostalgic, and enlightening, the film explores early feminism in Georgia, political opposition to the authoritative regime of Stalin, and courage in the face of adversity. Although the documentary deals with a period of history long gone, its themes remain actual: what defines our humanity, and which responsibilities do we have as citizens of the world, when political darkness surrounds us?
Lana Gogoberidze is a 93-year-old director who has become a legend of Georgian cinema. Her mother was the film director Nutsa Gogoberidze, who spent 12 years in a prison camp as a political prisoner. Lana studied literature and then filmmaking first in Tbilisi and later in Moscow. From the 1990s, she also acted as a diplomat and member of Parliament for Georgia. She has directed both fiction and documentary, and her film Day Is Longer Than Night was selected in 1984 at the Cannes Film Festival.
