A heartwarming and contemplative family drama from Iceland. A separated couple attempts to continue their everyday lives after the breakup, together with their three children on a remote farm.
Hlynur Pálmason's fourth film is a beautiful and grounded portrait of a family undergoing quiet but profound upheaval. After separating, Anna, an artist, and Magnús, a sailor who is often away at work, attempt to continue their daily lives on the farm together with their three children and the dog Panda.
With his distinctive blend of observation, surrealism, and symbolism, Pálmason allows small moments to swell into large emotions. The seasons glide by in hypnotic montages, art processes, and everyday rituals, while the relationship between the parents slowly but inevitably changes form. We are given a warm, undramatic, and often humorous glimpse into a family's dissolution – and into what nonetheless holds them together. Stylistically, the film is a softer and more playful chapter in Pálmason's filmography. The Love That Remains is a lyrical study in love, loss, and the passage of time. This is a film that invites us to be present, to breathe, to observe, and to feel.
