Three lonely souls meet in this epic film set on the edge of the Gobi Desert: a man, a woman, and a dog.
As China prepares for the Beijing Olympics, residents of a village near the Gobi Desert are relocated. They leave behind dogs that must be driven away before the area is demolished and replaced with a new modern city. Lang, recently released from prison, is the village's black sheep, having served time for involuntary manslaughter. He joins the patrol tasked with capturing the stray dogs and forms a special bond with a gaunt but clever black dog. At the same time, he seeks reconciliation with his old community—a challenging feat—and crosses paths with a woman passing through with the circus she works for.
Black Dog is a poetic blend of western, social drama, and a classic tale of honor and loyalty. With a taciturn protagonist, masterfully portrayed by Eddie Peng, the film captures the dramatic changes in China, where modernization and social upheaval impact both people and the environment. Lang's struggle for a new life and his unexpected friendship with the dog becomes a deeply moving journey. Black Dog was met with great acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival, winning the top prize in the Un Certain Regard section.
Guan Hu (b. 1968) is a Chinese director and producer. He was a member of China’s “sixth generation” of film directors. He has alternated between well-received low-budget projects, such as the black comedy Cow, and more grandly staged commercial spectacles, like the WWII epic The Eight Hundred, which became China’s top-grossing film of 2020.
