The Ground Beneath Our Feet offers a tender glimpse into the hidden world and everyday rituals of a lovely cast of people in what is their final home.
Set in a grand old building in Reykjavik, the film follows a group of residents who each have lived close to a century. As winter turns to summer, and summer to winter again, their lives unfold in a quiet cycle. The daily actions they have performed their whole lives are portrayed as meditative experiences, while their aging bodies and memories are likened to creeks flowing down a mountain to the sea.
This is a warm, deeply human film from a retirement home, brought to life by filmmaker Yrsa Roca Fannberg's poetic eye for the small mysteries and miracles of everyday life—and a great love for life itself, as long as it lasts. As Fannberg tells one resident early on: "This is a film about life."
Yrsa Roca Fannberg is born in Iceland, with Catalan heritage and brought up in Sweden. She has a BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art, London and a Master in Creative Documentary from Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona.
