Film Concert: Stella Polaris

Knut Erik Jensen's first feature film is a gripping portrayal of a Northern Norwegian coastal community, spanning from the pre-war era to the post-war period. Now presented with a new, hard-hitting musical score.

The story is told through the memories of an unnamed woman who returns to the fishing village of her childhood. We see life in fragments – scenes from childhood play and friendship, adult love affairs, and everyday life on the pier and in the fishing boat. Jensen's narrative structure is associative and fragmented, a visual stream-of-consciousness that allows the audience room for their own interpretation.

About the Music

Carl Christian Lein Størmer has a background from numerous bands. He has toured the world and has composed music across a wide spectrum of genres for over 25 years, the last decade also as a filmmaker and film composer. Lein Størmer will explore the audiovisual possibilities inherent in Jensen's iconic work, Stella Polaris. The original film features music composed by Arne Nordheim, but here, the film will be given a completely new expression as Lein Størmer collaborates with legends from the hardcore and metal scenes in Norway and Sweden. Joining him are Johannes Persson and Christian Augustin from the post-metal pioneers Cult of Luna from Umeå, as well as Båtsfjord native Marvin Nygaard, one of the founders of Kvelertak. The musicians will perform a new work in the spirit of Jensen and the film. It will be uncompromising, suggestive, and associative within a completely different musical genre than the film's original soundtrack. With this project, TIFF makes the film accessible and relevant for a new generation of audiences.
