Bird

Bird is a captivating coming-of-age film by Andrea Arnold, set in the tough streets of northern Kent. The film follows 12-year-old Bailey, who grows up in an unstable family. As she confronts the chaotic and difficult circumstances around her, she meets a mysterious wanderer named Bird.

Bailey’s world is marked by graffiti-covered houses and marginalized people. Her father, Bug, is preoccupied with bizarre plans, and her half-brother Hunter is an unpredictable guy. Though mostly left to her own devices, Bailey develops a strong sense of responsibility. Her life takes a surreal turn when she meets Bird, a strange and sensitive wanderer with a fascinating connection to Bailey’s sense of alienation. As their relationship develops, Arnold blends raw realism with magical realism, creating a narrative that is both gripping and full of hope.

At the heart of Bird is the meeting between childhood and adulthood, and the surprising ways in which people can affect each other’s lives. Arnold’s signature empathy shines through as she explores themes of poverty, family, and identity, offering a unique perspective on the challenges of growing up on the margins of society. Through stellar performances and Arnold’s intimate direction, the film paints a portrait of resilience and the untapped potential within us all.
