Bruce Brown's 1964 documentary is regarded as the greatest surfing movie ever made. It follows two surfers from California, the blond-haired Mike Hynson and the dark-haired Robert August, as they embark on a journey around the world to chase summer on their surfboards.
From West Africa to the shark-filled waters of Australia and on to Tahiti, these guys ride incredible waves with elegance and remarkable athleticism. Alongside the spectacular visuals, we’re treated to surf rock by The Sandals and Brown’s humorous commentary. Do they find the perfect wave? Yes, several of them—along with quirky surfers from around the globe. It’s a breathtaking journey.
Brown filmed in Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Hawaii, and California. Things didn’t always go as planned, but Brown wasn’t one to plan much—he preferred to go with the flow. Something always happened along the way, even when the waves weren’t in their favor. We will be screening the 60th Anniversary Edition of this fantastic surf classic.
