Childhood friends Nikolai and Vegard spent their free time on the ski slopes. Now, Nikolai is a professional skier, while Vegard trains obsessively to complete a life-threatening and physically demanding ski tour. A story about friendship and setting ambitious goals.
Vegard Rye is training to climb and ski down 27 mountains in a single continuous trip. This is equivalent to running four marathons while ascending Mount Everest from sea level – three times. To achieve this inhumane feat, Vegard isolates himself from friends and family and dedicates his entire existence to preparing his body for this unimaginable challenge. Nikolai decides to share his friend's story with the world, while also attempting to adopt his friend's dedicated "snow warrior monk" training, hoping to be named European Skier of the Year.
The film offers spectacular footage from Lyngen, where the skiers expose themselves to life-threatening situations in dramatic and thrilling scenes. We also get an entertaining overview of Nikolai Schirmer's career and insight into how much he has sacrificed to live the life he and Vegard dreamed of as children.
Nikolai Schirmer (b. 1991) grew up making online ski videos in Tromsø, and has now established himself as an award-winning skier with a global audience of millions following his steep adventures on YouTube, ski film festivals, his TV show and in traditional ski films. SKI is his first feature documentary.
