Based on a real story experienced by director Joanna Hogg, The Souvenir part II depicts the process of Julie's grieving and creative flourishing. The young film student's graduation project becomes the artistic channel to solve her unclear love story with a manipulative drug addict.
Julie is a young film student in the process of making her graduation project. After a tumultuous and tragic love relationship with a manipulative older man, Julie uses her graduation film as a path for self-reflection and grief. Her project is systematically discredited by her teachers and supervisors, who urge her to abandon the idea. Her colleagues do not understand her artistic vision and lack of communication, and her parents, while trying to be supportive, are skeptical about her choices. Julie must transform her doubtful reality of pain into cinema, and slowly reconstruct parts of her past memories.
Addressing the personal struggle of Julie to overcome her destructive past, The Souvenir part II interrogates the border between art and memory, and puts emphasis on what is not being seen: dialogues off-screen, empty spaces, long silences. This is a movie about the making of itself, in an autobiographical journey of director Joanna Hogg.
Joanna Hogg (b. 1960) is a British filmmaker. She has directed Unrelated (2007) and The Souvenir (2019), which premiered at the Sundance Festival in 2019. The sequel The Souvenir Part II premiered in Cannes in 2021, and was highly acclaimed by critics.
