Sound of Falling is an ambitious film that portrays four generations of women sharing a common dark destiny.
The film takes us to a rural village in northeastern Germany. Through four epochs, which are woven together in a fluid narrative, the suffering and the resilience of the women living there is portrayed. We witness a persistent history of being held down, discriminated against, and objectified. It is as if the women's destinies are interwoven by something beyond themselves; something that insists on being repeated from one generation to the next.
Mascha Schilinski takes us on a hypnotic journey, packed with symbolism and an almost all-consuming darkness. The film takes a deep dive into themes surrounding sexuality, power relations between the sexes, death, and upbringing. Sound of Falling is a fascinating drama that demands the audience's full attention. The film has been warmly received by critics and has been selected as Germany's official candidate for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film.
Mascha Schilinski (b. 1984) is a German director based in Berlin. She worked for a circus before pursuing her film education at the Filmschule Hamburg Berlin and the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg.
