Join the traditional community of Argentine cowboys and cowgirls, known as gauchos, who still live on horseback on the outskirts of the modern world. This hybrid documentary film celebrates a rich cultural heritage and a dying way of life in the countryside, using classic and stylized cinematic techniques.
Northwestern Argentina features a wild landscape of vast plains, white-capped mountains, and rugged, thorny terrain. Here lies the beating heart of Gaucho culture, which has often been portrayed in popular culture. Today, this is Argentina's wild west, where time stands still, and generations of gauchos continue to live as they always have—relying on cattle and the land.
In this portrait, we meet various colorful, horse-riding, maté-drinking cowboy characters, and gain exclusive insight into family life where traditions are passed down from generation to generation. Village life is depicted through a distinctive mix of observational realism and contrast-rich black-and-white cinematography reminiscent of old films.
The scenes in the film are incredibly beautiful, and the characters are proud, steep and determined to live in harmony with nature and animals, and to be true to themselves. At times, it’s easy to forget you’re watching a documentary!
Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw are an American director duo known for films that explore communities rarely shown on film. In The Truffle Hunters, we see how ingredients are handpicked for top European restaurants by eccentric truffle specialists. In The Last Race, the filmmakers go behind the scenes of Long Island’s stock car racing culture, which has lost its heyday and struggles to stay relevant.
