The Holdovers

Watch trailer

It’s December 1970 and the students at Barton Academy are going home for the Christmas holiday. Angus is the only student left on campus – together with the grumpy teacher Paul. But a friendship forms between the two, in this touching, mature drama comedy set in snowy New England.

Paul Hunham (Giamatti) is a grouchy teacher in classical studies at Barton Academy – a boarding school for boys in New England. As 1970 comes to an end, almost everyone goes home for Christmas, but some of the boys are stuck with Paul at campus. Soon the student Angus (Sessa) is the only one left, together with the cranky teacher and the cook Mary (Randolph). Angus and Paul are getting past a rough start and gradually understand that they can learn from each other, and they share some new and old experiences throughout the holiday.

The Holdovers marks a comeback for director Alexander Payne. This is a warm and insightful comedy inspired by American relationship films from the 70s and 80s, with exceptional performances from both Paul Giamatti and newcomer Dominic Sessa.

Note: The screening on Saturday is a part of our closing ceremony.
