It has been a while since man first understood that forbidden fruit is the best. Nevertheless, Mary, who is brought up in a very strict Laestadian community in Finland, wants to explore this on her own. This creates problems in a society where alcohol is banned, as is watching television and movies, you may not wear makeup nor listen to rock music, and where premarital sex is totally out of the question. Even a little kiss might send you straight to hell.

Mary wants to escape all of this and sets out to discover the world outside, with Rachel as her chaperon. The two 18-year-old innocent girls explore the unknown world head on and are forced to make some vital choices along the way, such as choosing between God and their own desires.

Dome Karukoski was born 1976 in Cyprus. His debut BEAUTY AND THE BASTARD from 2005 gave him international acclaim and he was awarded the Norwegian Amanda prize for best Nordic Debut film. His sequel, THE HOME OF THE BUTTERFLIES, also gave him great acclaim. Karukoski is half-American, half-Finnish.
